Eliezer Mayenda then doubled Sunderland’s lead four minutes later as Wednesday were caught napping at the back, before Luke O’Nien made a clever run to stay onside and knock home a third.

The lads didn’t let up in the second half, taking only 72 seconds to score a fourth, Jack Clarke fot free on the left and swept an inch-perfect pass into the path of Mayenda, who scored his second of the afternoon.

The result means Sunderland have started then new campaign with back-to-back wins, scoring six times without conceding.

After the game Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris said, “I’m happy, for sure. It was a perfect first game at home with this win.

“It’s good for us and we scored early. Just after the restart of the second half, too.

“I said in the dressing room, we have a talented group with many talented players. We can create on the pitch but the basics we need to build.

“Recovering the ball and counter pressing, this part was good today. For the second goal, we recovered the ball well and had this intention.”
